I'm not intimately familiar with the construction of them on that specific model, but assuming they follow the standard setup that almost every emergency brake is built by, they are two shoes inside the drum of your rear brakes that expand outward to press against the drum to stop the wheel from rotating. If you aren't, then the e-brake is most likely inside the rotor, and can't cause damage to the disk. You mention the brake rotors (rear disks). Many transmissions lock up because of this lashing (looking at you, Subaru). Any looseness in that system (generally U-joints, gears, and differentials) will feel that force much harder, and you can chip off pieces.

Locking your rear wheels will stop your differential, driveshaft, transmission, and half your clutch plates. Your entire driveline up to your clutch recieves a huge kick every time you pull the e-brake, and again when you release the clutch. Then, when the handbrake is pulled, that rust gets stuck between the outside of the cable and the inside of its housing, essentially sticking the e-brake on by sheer friction.ĭepending on how hard you yank it, snapping the cable is a very real risk. If your handbrake isn't used consistently, rust can form inside the cables.
